Rhebokskloof lies on the Noord-Agter Mountain region in Paarl which literally put our wines on another level from the other wine farms in the Paarl area. The Paarl route is unique as it stretches around a granite-laden mountain side that helps produce lush and bountiful grapes that make our award-winning wines.
With our 2022 harvest completed at the beginning of March, we are delighted to begin the production of our new vintage. Our winemaker, Rolanie Lotz shares her thoughts and experiences with us.
“Due to the cold and wet Spring season last year, our harvest started one week later than usual. In January, we were hit with a heatwave over the province which meant we had to keep a closer eye on our vineyards during this time. Irrigation had to be closely monitored to reduce stress and we had to check that our grapes did not get any sunburn. I’m happy to say that our hard work and vigilance paid off.
We received our first Chardonnay grapes on the 25th of January while the rest were harvested in February. Needless to say, it was a very busy time for the vineyard and cellar staff.
” …the aromas produced in the cellar were absolutely divine!”
Overall, the bunches were lighter and the berries smaller than the 2021 harvest, we had a better concentration in the juices and the aromas produced in the cellar were absolutely divine!
Both our 2022 Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay both promise to be rich with tropical and citrus fruit aromas that offer an exciting array of juicy palates!
The Pinotage 2022 shows great potential that yielded excellent colours and ripe lush tannins.
Our Shiraz, Durif and Mourvèdre grapes were harvested at slightly lower sugar levels during the heatwave. This was done to avoid a substantial increase in pH level and to preserve the fruits’ potential.
Expect our reds to be with slightly lower alcohol levels and a combination of deeper fruit aromas with spicy notes!
The final batch, the Carignan grapes, was harvested on the 10th of March and will be added to our Rhebok Red blend. This year we are fermenting the whole bunch of the Carignan varietal to better preserve its lovely red berry flavours.”
We cannot wait to see what this year’s harvest brings us. The wine farms in the Paarl area all boast incredible offerings and Rhebokskloof is no exception. Rhebokskloof prides itself through in continuing to offer tastes and experiences that are sophisticated, elegant and refined.
